Review of Oops...I Did It Again
By Meredith Chin
After her debut album, Baby One More Time in 1998,
Britney Spears has returned with her second album, Oops…I Did It Again.
Her first album, featuring hits such as the title track, “Crazy (You Drive
Me),””Sometimes,” and “From the Bottom of My Broken Heart,” topped the
charts but also gave Britney a younger, less experienced image. With a
combination of fast and slow songs, Britney is using her latest album to prove
that she is “not that innocent.” Britney now struggles to be stripped of her
pig tails and prep school uniform, determined to show that she can entertain
with the best of them.
Her first song on her new album, “Oops…I Did It Again,” seems the average
pop song with catchy lyrics and addictive dance moves. And even though she
starts out with a less than impressive title, it still ranks up there on the
“fun to dance to” chart. Other songs with the same up beat tone teenagers
thrive off of are: “Stronger,” ”What You See (Is What You Get),” and
“Lucky.” Britney transitions from song to song with short dialogues with
friends. At times this gets a little on the annoying side, but nothing stops you
from skipping straight to the next song. Overall, her fast tracks are her forte,
definitely the songs you will be turning up on the car radio.
But even with her attempt to sing and perform more “maturely,” Britney falls
short with some of her slower songs, including her remake of the Rolling
Stone’s “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Although the song sounds
drastically different from the original, some songs are better left the way they
were. Britney co-wrote the final track of the album, “Dear Diary,” but even
with her talent to entertain, it seems she should stick to singing.
All in all, you have to admire Britney’s perseverance in the industry. She
could be swept aside and left behind with the booming phenomenon of teeny bopper
hysteria but yet she continues to make the popular hits that play again and
again on the radio or at dances. Sure she has her belly bearing outfits most of
the time and her make-up coats her face like a jacket during winter time but
hey, her songs are catchy and fall nothing short of fun. Besides, anything is
better than Christina Aguilera.
