Review of Europop
By Meredith Chin
Yo, listen up! Here's the story about a
group called Eiffel 65. Eiffel 65 is a bunch of musicians, DJs and producers
that all work under one label, Bliss Corporation. But there are three main men,
Jeffrey Jey, Maurizio Lobina and Gabry Ponte, that act within the corporation to
create the tracks that are topping the charts not only in Europe but also the
US. "Blue", a song I'm sure you are familiar with, was the first one
to do that.
Let me just clear something up before I go on. There is a part of the song,
"Blue" where you may be totally confused, but I'm here to tell you,
it's not English or any other language, it's just gibberish. I feel your pain
though because the first fifty times I heard it, I thought they were saying,
"I'm Blue if I was green I would die!"
So you're probably wondering if the rest of the songs are a) as annoying as
"Blue" b) as good as "Blue" or c) any different from
"Blue." Well, it all depends. Some songs are annoying, some songs are
really good, and some songs sound exactly the same. But if you think about it,
you're going to find that with almost every album you buy.
As for the songs that are more annoying than "Blue,"
"Hyperlink" could be categorized as "could have done
without." And, if you go to track six, "My Console," you'll find
it sounds very similar to "Blue" in the beginning. It gets pretty
boring after that. Oh, and by the way, I'll pay money to anyone who can tell me
what the hell they are spelling in that song! So far I've got
"V-M-A-Y-S-T-A-T-I-O-N." What's a "vmaystation?"
Tracks ten and twelve, "Now Is forever" and "Europop," are
sort of in their own category. You feel like you've just gone straight into The
Matrix. The only thing missing is Laurence Fishburne telling you to
"free your mind". But don't worry, tumbling down the rabbit hole isn't
so bad, those songs provide a strong techno beat that are great to dance to.
The other songs on the album make it a worthwhile purchase. My own personal
favorites: "Too Much of Heaven," "Living in a Bubble,"
"Move Your Body" and "The Edge."
If you're still wondering if this is an album you want, I can make it easy for
you. If you like to dance to techno music, you like a good beat, you can dig the
vibe...go for it. I'm sure you won't be disappointed and you'll be thanking me
when you're in the car bombin' around with your friends.
More Info:
I'm going to recommend that you not go to their website if you hate
"Blue" because it plays non-stop when you go there. There is no
escaping it. But if you don't mind that song, check
it out, it has pictures, the video to their song, and you can hear some of
their other songs if you're curious.
