Review of Dizzy Up the Girl
By Meredith Chin
The Goo Goo Dolls formed in the mid-80's in Buffalo, NY. Since then, they
have launched themselves from Buffalo to "Broadway" with hit singles
and their latest and greatest album, Dizzy Up The Girl. The trio, Robby,
Mike and John, plays with passion, determination and heart in every song. Or so
it's been said.
I have to admit I was slightly scared at first. I didn't know what I had in
store with a name like "The Goo Goo Dolls." But then I heard their
first hit off their album Dizzy Up The Girl, "Iris." I fell in
love with the song. I knew from the second I heard the song that I wanted the
album. I'm sure I'm not the only one that felt that way either, it's a good
song. Sweet lyrics, but not too sweet to the point of being clichéd.
Then their next hit was released on the radio, "Slide." The lyrics
were cute, the beat was catchy but I didn't fall in love as I did with the first
song – talk about being cliché! Just because one song didn't spark my
interest, I didn't let that stop me. My friend kindly let me borrow the album to
give it a "test drive." The next song that caught my attention was, of
course, "Black Balloon." Apparently I wasn't the only one that felt it
was a good song considering the radio just killed it for me by playing it over
and over and over.
But don't judge the album from the hits played on the radio. The radio may have
gone over board with a couple of their tunes but is much more to the album than
just three songs.
The "softer" tunes such as "Acoustic #3" "Full
Forever" and "All Eyes On Me," aren't hard to like, while the
other songs may need an acquired taste. Dizzy may seem abrupt at first
and you may not venture passed the first 5 or 6 seconds just like I did the
first time I heard that song. But I can assure you that some of these songs are
just like a box of chocolates. Not only do you never really know what you're
going to get but that if you get to the middle, you'll realize that it was all
worth while. "Bullet Proof," and "Extra Pale" are the
perfect examples of that.
You really have to hear it and decide for yourself if it's a "must
get" album.
