Review of Dogma
Reviewed by Young Il Kim
Director: Kevin Smith
Starring: Ben Affleck,Matt Damon,Chris Rock,Linda Fiorentino,Salma Hayek
Okay, I have to be quite honest. I don’t get this public fascination with Kevin Smith. Remind me again why he is the Scorcese of our generation because I keep forgetting. I never saw Clerks. I never saw Mallrats. I saw a part of Chasing Amy because any movie with a lesbian lead character is…okay, let’s talk about Kevin Smith. I am not sure how and why this movie got made. Perhaps, it was Kevin Smith’s way of giving bit parts to all of his friends. This movie is also the reunion of the affable duo of Affleck and Damon since that other movie. If you are into movies filled with big names and a lousy plot, perhaps Cannonball Run is a better bet.
Dogma, as the narrator reminds us, is a fictitious account of two angels, Bartleby (Affleck) and Loki (Damon), who are laid off by God. Even Christianity is a big corporation, and some angels get the pink slip. They find some loophole with the Catholic church that would enable them to re-enter heaven. If they somehow accomplish their task, it is, as Michael Stipe would say, the end of the world as we know it. It is up to Bethany (Fiorentino), a remote descendant of Christ, to stop them. She ain’t exactly up to the task as she had some hard-luck lately, and she was losing her religion. She is aided by Rufus (Rock) and two prophets. I applaud some funny performances by some shiny happy people. Alan Rickman was hilarious. Rock was basically doing stand-up as the homeboy who chilled with Jesus Christ. But Ben and Matt were damn annoying. Linda was drier than saltines. And I don’t know what the supposed former infatuation junkie was doing in this movie. Her performance was ironic at best.
Yes, the movie takes Roman Catholicism lightly. However, I don’t think that the church should have cared all that much. Why? I don’t know if you know this but the Pope is a huge fan of Chris Rock. And he loved Good Will Hunting. He told me so himself. And for the church to give even a mild protest to this movie just gave this lame story some marketing legs.
In conclusion, I think that this movie is a mixed bag. If you are a huge Kevin Smith fan, you probably will like this movie in the same way I like Jackie Chan movies. Jackie Chan movies aren’t for everyone, but he has his loyal followers. If you are a teenybopper who loves any crap that Ben and Matt are in, this is for you. But if you like their acting ability, you don’t see it here. And if you are like me and haven’t seen any of Kevin Smith’s movies and wanted to see what the big deal was, then prepare to be disappointed.
