Review of
Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo

In the latest of the recent wave of Saturday Night Live alums of five years ago hitting Hollywood, Rob Schneider stars in the comedy Deuce Bigelow. Produced by his buddy, Adam Sandler, this project had all the makings of a bomb. In fact, when I saw the trailer, I kept on muttering, “This is so stupid. I can’t believe they made the movie. Who is going to see it?” Given the fact that I am writing a review, you probably can assume that I saw it (although I have written reviews of movies I haven’t seen or movies that don’t even exist). I rented this because I expected to make fun of how bad this movie was. While I would not put this movie up with cinematic greats like Happy Gilmore or Tommy Boy, I found this movie to be decent.
The story is about a downtrodden plumber/pool tank cleaner Deuce Bigalow (Schneider) who is asked to care for a popular gigolo’s fish tank while the gigolo is on vacation. After he wrecks the place and destroys the fish, Deuce is forced to embark on a new career as a gigolo for ten dollars per hour. Because of the nature of this movie, he cannot hook up with good-looking ladies…that wouldn’t be funny. Meanwhile, he is being chased by a detective who has some burning sensation in his private area (don’t we all!).
I initially thought that I would write more for this review but realized that there really is no plot. It is just a weak premise to get cheap laughs. And for a better part of the movie, it works. During the movie, I expected Adam Sandler or any of the other SNL cronies to make cameos, but that doesn’t happen. Now, I am not saying that you should rent this movie. You shouldn’t rent it if you haven’t seen any other slapstick works. However, if you have nothing better to do on a Friday night (and you know who you are—if it makes you feel better, I am writing this on a Friday night) and you have seen all the other comedies already, rent this movie. I guarantee that you won’t want to see it again but you won’t feel ripped off either.
