Dating Tips

I am not the best individual to provide any sort of dating advice, especially since I have not actively dated in… X years (not Roman numeral but pretty damn close). However, I sit about five feet away from Angela every day, and she tells me about all her dates. Now, before I continue, it is important to mention that Angela is HOT. She is the type that makes heads turn at a bar or on a sidewalk or wherever. She is not your average, typical girl, but the epitome of a young woman: college-educated, smart, beautiful, and funny, with a great personality. Also, she likes going out and going on dates. So based on what she says about her dates, here's my analysis:

1. Looks aren't necessarily everything.
I won't lie by saying that women want frogs and aren't looking for Prince Charming. Angela generally goes out with good-looking guys. But she is willing to kiss a lot of frogs (metaphorical and not literal). However, her recipe of a "good-looking guy" is a dash of personality, a pinch of humor, a teaspoon of romance, a spoonful of confidence and style, and a serving of intelligence. On Mondays, she usually tells me about the guys she met over the weekend. She tells me about how stupid or cool they were and what they do for a living. When I overhear her conversations, she describes a new guy in this order: his personality, profession/what he does, his style, and, finally, his looks. If she had a good conversation with someone, she will likely think that person is good-looking. This is not to say that you can go from Quasimodo to Brad Pitt with your personality, but it is the biggest plus.

2. No stalkers.
There is a fine line between showing interest and being psychotic. Dweeb #1 wrote her a long introductory email after meeting her the night before. He visited our site (Thanks, man!), read her bio, and then wrote her his life story, which included the loser clubs he belonged to in high school and in college. He then proceeded to call the office profusely, asking her out on numerous dates. A better approach would have been to visit the site, and start off the email saying, "Angela, it was nice meeting you. I just checked out your bio on your website. I didn't know that you went to Florida State. I love your football team. Blah blah blah. What a great site!!!"

3. Cool down, Romeo.
I remember this one other guy who had a date with Angela. It went so-so. It could have been better, but it was decent enough that she was sharing emails and phone calls with her friends about it over the next few days. (Note: Girls have this incredible network of communications. I am amazed at how quickly news spreads about a good or bad guy.) I would say that his chance of getting a second date was fair. However, he overdid it with what Angela calls "the post-date follow-up." She said she lost interest because he took the whole mystery out of dating. It was too obvious that he was into her. He did send her a card that I thought was funny. She made fun of it. However, I do know that she appreciated the gesture. It was just too soon for her. Perhaps that alone would have been good. But when that is combined with frequent phone calls and emails (especially, after only one date), that's just too much.

4. No Rico Suaves, Por Favor
Now, Dweeb #2 is someone who acted like he carried a bat in his jeans. But he struck out. On New Year's Eve, Angela met this guy who, within the first three minutes, mentioned that he had graduated from Harvard, was the founder of a start-up company, and blah blah blah. He then gave her an unexpected kiss at midnight. Yes, there was tongue… "Ewwwwww" was her reaction. He followed up with emails suggesting that they go out to dinner. However, his emails and attitude were reserved for "Blind Date." He pretty much assumed that she was a piece of meat. Upon my urging (because I wanted to write this article), she did go to dinner with him. The next day, she told me that she had the worst date ever. But she already knew that it was going to be a horrible date because…
